MASTERMIND OF «THE CHAMBER STRINGS»

 

Kevin Junior has been the mastermind behind The Chamber Strings since their formation in 1996. The band’s first album ‘Gospel Morning’ was released in 1997 on Idiot Savant Records, then later reissued in 2001 to coincide with the band’s breakthrough ‘Month of Sundays’. After a period of ill-health Kevin has re-built the band and is working tirelessly to get his new songs out to old and new fans alike. For anyone who is a fan of well-crafted, thoughtful songs the Chamber Strings is a necessary addition to your music collection.

 

Kevin Junior ha sido la mente maestra detrás de The Chamber Strings desde su formación en 1996. El primer álbum de la banda, «Gospel Morning», fue publicado en 1997 en Idiot Savant Records, luego re editado en 2001 para coincidir con el éxito de la banda «Months of Sundays». Luego de un período de enfermedad, Kevin reconstruyó la banda y está trabajando para  lanzar sus canciones para viejos y nuevos fanáticos. Para cualquiera que es fan de canciones bien pensadas, The Chamber Strings es una adición necesaria para su colección de música.

 

 

The most important question is in regard to your health, how are you doing these days?

Thanks. I’m doing much better than I was before Open Heart Surgery. I still have some medical problems that I just have to deal with, but I’ve kept busy this past year. There is a new Chamber Strings line-up based out of Cleveland & we’ve done some great shows. We’ve played with both Paul Weller and Nick Lowe, as well as some headline stuff. I try and treat myself good & don’t get into the sort of things I did when I was a younger man! 

 

La pregunta más importante es con respecto a tu salud, ¿cómo estás estos días?

Gracias, estoy mucho mejor de como estaba antes de la operación de corazón. Todavía tengo algunos problemas médicos de los que tengo que ocuparme, pero me mantuve ocupado este último año. Ahora hay una nueva  Chamber Strings con base en Cleveland y hemos hecho grandiosos shows. Hemos tocado con Paul Weller y Nick Lowe, así como otros. Trato y me trato bien y no me meto en la clase de cosas que hacía cuando jóven.

How did the transformation from punk and glam lead to such carefully orchestrated pop?

That’s an interesting question. I always loved all the music we are talking about, but at first I was only technically able to play like Johnny Thunders. I loved that kinda stuff, so it was fine. But I had ambitions to make a huge and well written record. So, as the years passed, I graduated to being able to play Stones ‘Exile’ type stuff, then Beatles, and then studied how to make a Burt Bacharach kind of record. It took time! I had to really learn a lot of things on guitar that went beyond a bar chord and understand the piano and how big melody can be created.   

 

¿Cómo fue que de punk y glam se transformaron en este pop orquestral?

Interesante pregunta. Siempre amé la música de la que hablamos, pero al principio solamente podía tocar como Johnny Thunders. Me encantaba ese estilo, así que estaba bien. Pero tenía ambiciones de hacer un disco grande y bien escrito. Por eso, a medida que pasaron los años, logré tocar «Exile» de los Stones, luego los Beatles, y luego estudié cómo hacer un disco al estilo de Burt Bacharach.  Me llevó tiempo, Tuve que aprender un montón de cosas en guitarra que estaban más allá de acordes de barra y entender piano y cómo una gran melodía podía ser creada.

 

 

The Chamber Strings

 

Are there lyrics that either you’ve written or that other people have written that just pop into your head because they resonate with you?  For instance, lyrics from either ‘Cold Cold Meltdown’ or ‘Flashing Star’ will sometimes just pop into my head and kind of sum up how I feel about a situation or person.

Well, I just always write from personal experience. I figure that people will pick up on some things and relate it to their life situations. Never thought I was a poet like Dylan, but words are important to me, and I won’t finish a song until they are true and meaningful. Some people can really pull off «I’m late for a date on a Saturday Night» sort of things so well and I love that when it has conviction. I sometimes wish that I could write more songs like that & just have a laugh! 

 

 

 

¿Las letras que escribiste, o que otra gente escribió, se te aparecen mágicamente en la cabeza porque resuenan con vos? Por ejemplo, la letra de «Cold Cold Meltdown» o de «Flashing Star» a veces simplemente aparecen en mi cabeza y resumen cómo me siento sobre una situación o persona.

Bueno, siempre escribo sobre experiencia personal. Supongo que la gente toma cosas y las relaciona con su vida. Nunca pensé que sería un poeta como Dylan, pero las palabras me importan, por eso no termino una canción hasta que son verdaderas y significativas. Algunas personas realmente no pueden con «Im Later For a Date on a Saturday Night», ese tipo de cosas, y me encanta cuando tiene ésa convicción. Aveces deseo que pudiera escribir más canciones como esa y reírme. 

 

 

 

What songs are you the most proud of?

All my new ones. ‘I Come Apart (a Tragic Comedy)’ -was released in 2009 as a 45 single. ‘Last Lovers’, ‘Beautiful You’, ‘All Of Your Life’, ‘Our Dead Friends’, ‘Thank My Lucky Stars’….I’m proud of all the Chamber Strings songs.

De las nuevas «I Come Apart (A Tragic Comedy)» fue lanzada en 2009 como single 45. «Last Lover»,  ‘Beautiful You’, ‘All Of Your Life’, ‘Our Dead Friends’, ‘Thank My Lucky Stars’….Estoy orgulloso de todas las cancions de The Chamber Strings.

 

 

 

In your experience, which is a more appreciative market for music (and the arts in general), America, Britain, or Europe?

Well, Europe has always been so kind to me. It’s so rewarding to go over and tour there. People really lose their minds and are so serious about the music -show up 10 minutes before the gig, don’t talk, stay to get records signed, and they let us travel in comfort. However, I have played for amazing audiences everywhere. Every part of The States & England. Fans in Japan are passionate, of course. I’m doing a tour of Spain this spring & can’t wait. Really, I just always feel blessed to travel anywhere and at this point there are always at least a few fans even at venues in the middle of nowhere. Thanks to you people!    

 

En tu experiencia, cuál es el mercado más apreciativo para la música y el arte en general, Estados Unidos, Inglaterra o  o el resto de Europa?

Buenos, Europa siempre me fue cálida.  Es tan beneficioso  ir allá en tour. La gente realmente pierden su cabeza y son tan serios respecto a la música; llegar diez minutos antes del show, no hablar, quedarse para que te firmen el cd, y nos dejan viajar cómodamente. Sin embargo,  he tocado para audiencias geniales en todas partes. En Estados Unidos e Inglaterra. Los fans de Japón son apasionados. Por supuesto, estoy haciendo un tour por España esta primavera y no puedo esperar. Realmente siempre me sentí bendecido por poder viajar por todo el mundo y a éste punto siempre hay aunque sea unos pocos fans en lugares en el medio de la nada. Gracias a todos!

 

 

 

Has there been any new music, or trends that have interested you in the last few years?

That is a difficult one to answer. I don’t hear a lot of new records & then I tend to forget what I like. Los Tupper from Spain, Liam Hayes & The Hushdrops from Chicago come to mind. I love the last Ian McLagan record & the past 4 Nick Lowe records. I know there are many more but I just can’t think right now…Trends? That is rough! Trends bother me because they just are not too appealing to me these days. I cannot stand watching people playing with their phones during a concert. Just please look up, life is happening in front of you! I realize how useful computers are, but I remember how we were able to still do things easily before all of that. You do have to move with the times. Ah, vinyl! That is a great comeback and I guess, a trend, right now. I can get behind that for sure…

 

¿Ha habido alguna música nueva o tendencia que les haya interesado en los últimos años?

Esta es difícil de responder. No he escuchado mucha música nueva y tiendo a olvidar lo que me gusta. Los Tupper de España, Lian Hayes & The Hushdrops de Chicago se me ocurren. Me encanta el último disco de Ian McLagan y los últimos 4 de Nick Lowe. Sé que hay mucho más pero no puedo pensar bien ahora. ¿Tendencias? Eso es duro! Las tendencias me molestan porque  no me interesan mucho que digamos. No puedo soportar ver a la gente con sus celulares durante los recitales. Por favor, mirá hacia adelante, la vida está en frente tuyo! Me doy cuenta qué útiles son las computadoras, pero recuerdo cómo todavía podíamos hacer cosas antes de eso. Hay que moverse con los tiempos. Ah, el vinilo! Es genial que hay vuelto, supongo, una tendencia, ahora mismo.
