FAMILY PHOTOS!

Fryd Frydendahl is a photographer from the west coast of Denmark. She divides her time between New York and Copenhagen. Her photography has a strong sense of bright colors. One of Fryd’s longterm projects is titled “Nephews”. The project is about her two Nephews and it deals with the loss of their mother’s death and growing up. Her photos transmit such natural and innocent feelings towards the viewer. we had a small talk to her about her work.

Fryd Frydendahl es una fotógrafa con sede en Ringkobing, Dinamarca, que también es su ciudad natal. Su fotografía tiene una fuerte carga de colores brillantes, y trata principalmente de retratos de jóvenes cercanos a su familia. El proyecto más reciente de Fryd se llama «Sobrinos», lo que, obviamente, tiene un fuerte vínculo con ella y su familia. Sus fotos transmiten sentimientos tan naturales e inocentes hacia el espectador.

Tell me three things that define your work.
Three things, hmm, thats hard. I guess relationships tend to be a big part of it. Color and limbs… I don’t know if this is defining the work but it’s a part of i

Dime tres cosas que definen tu trabajo.
Tres cosas, eh, eso es duro. Supongo que las relaciones tienden a ser una gran parte de el. El color y las extremidades … no sé si esta es la definición de la obra, pero es una parte de ella.

Why have you chosen photography to express yourself?
I tried other stuff like drawing and painting but I wasn’t good at any of it. When i was a teenager i used to do a lot of collages, my bedroom walls was covered with imagery. Photographs has always been important.When i was 17 my school therapist asked me what i wanted to be and i answered photographer. Know i am one.

¿Por qué elegiste la fotografía para expresarte?
Traté de otras cosas como el dibujo y la pintura, pero no era bueno en nada de eso. Cuando era adolescente solía hacer un montón de collages, las paredes de mi cuarto estaban llenas de imagenes. Las fotografías siempre han sido importantes.Cuando tenía 17 mi terapeuta en la escuela me preguntó que quería ser y yo respondí fotógrafo. Sé que soy uno.

Tell me about your project «Nephews”.
They are the loves of my life. The youngest of the two was born the night before my sisters past away. He turned 12 today. The project started a few years after she past. It is something about family. Even though things aren’t right in our different relations, we still can’t hide. My oldest nephew is a young man now and he has his own life but even so, i know he will always be a part of mine too.

Hableme de tu proyecto «Sobrinos».
Ellos son los amores de mi vida. El más joven de los dos nació la noche antes de que mis hermanas muriesen. Hoy cumplió 12 años. El proyecto se inició hace unos años después que ella murió. Es algo sobre la familia. Aunque las cosas no están bien en nuestras relaciones diferentes, todavía hay cosas que no se pueden ocultar. Mi sobrino mayor es un hombre joven ahora y tiene su propia vida, pero aún así, yo sé que él siempre será una parte de la mía también.

Are you inspired by your models during the shooting, or is the selection of the models based on your inspiration?
I only photograph people that interest me, it’s a mutual exchange.

¿Tus modelos te inspiran durante la sesión, o es la selección de los modelos se basa en la inspiración?
Sólo fotografío gente que me interesan, es un intercambio mutuo.

Tell me about the videos that you appear in.
Ι have a project called characters. Ιt’s about memories, my memories. the way i recall my own reality. Ι take those memories and create characters and play out small narratives that connects to them.
Ι also make videos with my friend, Megumi Tomomitsu. Our joint venture is called Birds Production. We do music videos.

Hablame de los vídeos en los que apareces.
Tengo un proyecto llamado caracteres. Es sobre los recuerdos, mis recuerdos. La forma en que recuerdo mi propia realidad. Tomo esos recuerdos y creo personajes y realizo pequeños relatos que se conectan a ellos.
Ι también hago videos con mi amigo, Megumi Tomomitsu. La empresa que tenemos juntos se llama Birds Producción. Hacemos videos musicales.

Are you working on something new at the moment?
I am always working on something.I have 2 shows coming up this summer. And i am developing these new video portraits that is different from what i usually do, that’s exciting!

Siempre estoy trabajando en algo. Tengo 2 muestras este verano. Y estoy desarrollando estos nuevos retratos de video que son diferentes a lo que suelo hacer, eso es emocionante!
