Al was born in Houston TX and has been in art and photography all of his life. He currently works with his own publication called Cray Magazine spotlighting contemporary photography and he has worked with some wonderful photographers and artists in the Houston TX area to help promote art and photography.

Al is also in a ambient band called «The Silent Star» with a few friends that are artists also. His work has been published in many different magazines including Dazed and Confused London and B&W magazine. He wishes to continue to promote other artists around the world and create as much as possible.

Al nació en Houston TX y ha estado en el arte y la fotografía de toda su vida. Actualmente trabaja con su propia publicación llamada Cray revista que pone de relieve la fotografía contemporánea y ha trabajado con algunos fotógrafos maravillosos y artistas en el área de Houston TX para ayudar a promover el arte y la fotografía.
Al también toca en una banda ambiental llamada «The Silent Star» con unos amigos que son artistas. Su trabajo ha sido publicado en muchas revistas diferentes, incluyendo Dazed and Confused Londres y B & W revista. Él desea seguir promoviendo otros artistas alrededor del mundo y crear tanto como sea posible.

How did you come up with the idea of creating Cray Magazine? Do you just promote artists from Texas in this Mag or from other parts of the world too?

Cray which stands for (Creative, Radical, Artistic and Youthful) was an idea I had after a long talk with a friend that got his artwork rejected from a larger magazine he submitted to. He simply wanted to showcase his work which in my opinion was wonderful, So I thought that we need something for the creative voices that are just starting in the art world. So CRAY was born!! At first it was very local but through talks with friends in London and Paris it showed me this should be more of a Global Magazine since artists where having a hard time showcasing their works in their native countries.

¿Cómo se te ocurrió la idea de crear Cray Magazine? ¿Promoves artistas de Texas en este Mag o de otras partes del mundo también?
Cray que significa (Creative, Radical, Artístico y Juvenil) era una idea que tuve después de una larga conversación con un amigo cuya obra fue rechazada por una revista importante. Él simplemente quería mostrar su trabajo que en mi opinión era una maravilla, así que pensé que necesitamos algo para las voces creativas que están empezando en el mundo del arte. Así CRAY nació !! Al principio era muy local pero a través de conversaciones con amigos en Londres y París me mostró que debería ser másbien una revista global, ya que los artistas están teniendo dificultades para mostrar sus obras en sus países de origen.

When and why did you start «The Silent Star» ? Does it have any kind of connection with your photography project and your digital Mag? Surely there is something that somehow connects everything you do.

I have always played music since my father was a jazz musician I grew up with music and art in the house, The Silent Star is a artistic group with me and two of my artist friends John Strel and Scott Delaney started in 2012. We love making noise and exploring sound and we love to create music and treat it more like a painting using different elements and we might hear in remote areas. Its just another way we can be creative, as you know creation brings about more creation and the more you do it the more you want to do it. I think that the major connection with my work is that it all comes from a place that wants to bring people together as much as possible..

¿Cuándo y por qué comenzaste a tocar con «The Silent Star»? ¿Tiene algún tipo de conexión con tu proyecto de fotografía y tu Mag digital? Seguramente hay algo que conecta de alguna manera todo lo que haces.
Siempre he tocado música ya que mi padre era un músico de jazz, crecí con música y arte en la casa, The Silent Star es un grupo artístico mío y de dos de mis amigos artistas John Strel y Scott Delaney; comenzó en 2012. Nos encanta hacer el ruido y la exploración del sonido y nos encanta crear música y tratarla más como una pintura utilizando diferentes elementos que podríamos escuchar en áreas remotas. Es sólo otra manera de ser creativos, como usted sabe creación provoca una mayor creación y cuanto más lo haces, más desea hacerlo. Creo que la principal conexión con mi trabajo es que todo viene de un lugar que quiere unir a la gente tanto como sea posible ..

When did you realize you where an artist? Do you remember some special event during your childhood?

I love art, and my mother a poet and deep thinker herself brought me to the museums at an early age, and encouraged me to get involved with art and let my creative mind flow. So I grew up with this thought in mind that art is my voice to speak to the world..

¿Cuándo te diste cuenta de que eras un artista? ¿Recuerdas algún evento especial durante tu infancia?
Me encanta el arte, y mi madre era poeta y pensadora profunda; ella misma me llevó a los museos a una edad temprana, y me animé a involucrarme con el arte y dejé volar mi mente creativa. Así que crecí con este pensamiento en mente que el arte es mi voz para hablar con el mundo ..

Where do you get inspiration for your photography work and what kind of mechanics do you use? For example is » the constant stare» just a photo or does it combine other technics? Im really curious about this one. Is it a doll?

Inspiration is everywhere, so its more about knowing what subjects to frame or not, I really find myself looking into my past which is infused with folklore and spiritual sonnets and I pick from the vast stories of my mother, father and grand father, I try to convey the stories of witchcraft and the surreal and put them into a modern context. One of my favorite models to use is a mannequin called «Peggy Plastic» shes from the early 1950’s and has lots of spirit. She was given to me from a friend that found her in a abandoned building and she has been in many of my photos ever since.

¿De dónde sacas la inspiración para tu trabajo de fotografía y qué tipo de mecanismos se utilizan? Por ejemplo «la mirada constante» es sólo una foto o se combinan otras técnicas? Estoy realmente curiosa acerca de esto. ¿Es una muñeca?

La inspiración está en todas partes, por lo tanto se trata más acerca de conocer qué temas enmarcar o no, realmente me encuentro mirando en mi pasado que se infunde con folclore y espirituales sonetos, y escojo de las grandes historias de mi madre, padre y abuelo, para transmitir las historias de brujería y surrealismo y ponerlos en un contexto moderno.

Uno de mis modelos favoritos para usar, es un maniquí llamada «Peggy plástica» es deprincipios de 1950 y tiene un montón de espíritu. Me la dió un amigo que la encontró en un edificio abandonado y ella ha estado en muchas de mis fotos desde entonces.

What is «Design is Kinky» and what is the concept behind it?

Design is Kinky is a really neat magazine that started in 1998 and has brought out a lot of wonderful artist and creators. I have been following their magazine for a while and its just a great place to find new talented artist and inspiration.

¿Qué es «El diseño es Kinky» y cuál es el concepto detrás de esto?
El diseño es Kinky es una revista muy ordenada que se inició en 1998 y ha mostrado una gran cantidad de maravillosos artistas y creadores. He estado siguiendo su revista por un tiempo y es sólo un gran lugar para encontrar nuevos artistas con talento e inspiración.

Tell us about other projects going on. .

Well, I’m working on this project called «Blanc et Noir the Works of Al Saulso 2005-2015» it a comprehensive look at my surrealist work from 2005 to present and will include most of the works that I did for magazine publications and special projects. I’m thinking of self-publishing the book but I’m also staying open to working with a publishing house. Then I’m hoping to show the works in Paris and across Europe with the help of some crowdfunding which is in progress as we speak. I never stop creating its how I breathe!!

Bueno, estoy trabajando en este proyecto llamado «Blanc et Noir las Obras de Al Saulso 2005-2015» es una mirada comprensiva de mi obra surrealista de 2005 hasta el presente e incluirá la mayor parte de las obras que hice para publicaciones de revistas y proyectos especiales. Estoy pensando en la auto-publicación del libro, pero también me quedo abierto a trabajar con una editorial.

Entonces estoy esperando para mostrar las obras en París y en toda Europa con la ayuda de un poco de difusión,que está en curso en estos momentos. Nunca dejo de crear;es como respiro !!
