‘Rock and roll will never die’, Neil Young proclaimed in his anthem, ‘Hey, Hey, My, My (into the black)’ and yet all I hear on the streets of my hometown is, ‘where have all the young, cool hip bands gone?’ Well, folks, The Britanys have arrived!

The Britanys could belong in any generation through the contributions of inspiration they have received from legendary rock groups, The Seeds right through rock and roll family tree to the Strokes. The great news is that whilst their sounds reminisce such inspirations the tunes are delivered with an authenticity honed only through talented ability and individuality.

They have the talent, apparel and with names like Gabe, Steele, Lucas and Jake rivalling Fab, Julian, Albert, Nikolai and Nick can we finally forget about The Strokes?

Their latest collection, ‘A night with The Britanys’ is a EP epiphany of three guitar mantras for young bored suburban kids waiting to get laid, and city boys needing anthems to sound track the vicious and erotic nature of city escapades.

The EP cover art is based upon a packet of Marlboro Red smokes. The songs hardly last as long as a packet shared by the band on stage, yet the songs fill any New York venue like the smoke inhaled pervades within your lungs. The songs manifest instantly and prove more addictive than the nicotine.

Here is an exclusive interview with the band from describing where it all began, their ‘sound’, equipment used in the studio, and why they are now fulfilling the songs’ ambitions, as a four piece.

When I dig a band I like to shamelessly study the members whom comprises that group! Could you describe yourself individually to the readers of ASU?

Jake: Ours is a very delicate ecosystem and our chemistry as musicians seems to come from each of us having pretty distinct personalities. Lucas is very much the captain of the ship as the lead singer and writer in the band — he’s the big picture guy. Steele is the demolitions expert, and also keeps everyone on track, ya know. As the drummer he is really tasked with keeping the live shows focused and tight– but off the stage he does what all drummers should do and sips tequila and gets along with everyone very easily. Gabe is the talented one — the boy makes us all look like goons when he plays bass and records everything that we do. I’m the wild card and usually talk about garbage or break things on stage, keep things interesting you know.

Cuando me gusta una banda, me gusta estudiar descaradamente a los miembros que comprenden ese grupo! ¿Podrías describirte de forma individual para los lectores de ASU?

Jake: El nuestro es un ecosistema muy delicado y nuestra química como músicos parece venir de que cada uno de nosotros tiene personalidades muy distintas. Lucas es el capitán de la nave como el cantante y escritor de la banda – él es el tipo de la foto grande. Steele es el experto en demoliciones, y también mantiene a todos en la pista, ya sabes. How did the band meet up and are you guys native NYC boys?

Steele: Jake and I are from New York, Jake went to Bronx Science and I went to the Trevor Day School. Gabe and Lucas came here for school a couple of years ago, Gabe from Concord, MA and Lucas from San Francisco. Gabe and I were roommates our Freshman year and both went to The New School for Jazz. Right before our spring break I met Lucas and he asked if I wanted to play drums in a group with him. I was down and said that my roommate was a bass player and that was that. We played our first show the Thursday after we returned from break.

Steele: Jake y yo somos de Nueva York, Jake fue a Bronx Science y yo fui a la Escuela Trevor Day. Gabe y Lucas vinieron aquí para la escuela hace un par de años, Gabe de Concord, MA y Lucas de San Francisco. Whom are your style icons and does NYC influence your style at all?

Steele: New York definitely influences our style. I wouldn’t say we have specific style icons, but we draw from the way people dress in different cities and decades. Lucas, Jake, and Gabe keep it classy with a lot of dark tones and jeans. Recently I’ve been really into buying 90’s sports clothes. NY Knicks starter jackets, old nba sweatshirts, etc. Also I like to buy a lot of retro British football kits and training tops.

Steele: Nueva York sin duda influye en nuestro estilo. Yo no diría que tenemos iconos de estilo específicos, pero sacamos la forma de vestir de diferentes ciudades y décadas. Initially I heard the song ‘want to be’ which was an immediate lo-fi gem to the senses. Since then you guys have gone onto state that you ‘felt like we didn’t relate to those songs or those sounds anymore.” A few months ago, you added another guitarist, Jake (Williams), and released two new singles, “It’s What It Is” and “City Boys,” both of which were representative of a new, fuller, more refined sound. “ So, adding Jake to the line up did that bring on this new exploration of ‘sound’ or was this already in mind? confusingly, I must ask why do you feel unable to relate with your previous rad sounds.

Lucas: Taking ‘Want To Be’ down was our way of making a statement. Bit of a risky move , a move that was under a lot of debate between us and advised against by most of the people we go to for an outside opinion. It wasn’t that we don’t relate to the song (it’s still one of our favorites) but rather the song had evolved since we laid down that recording, with new parts and different ways of attacking the end result that I thought was better. Just a matter of the arrangement and performance in the recording not sitting with me- Anal, meticulous things that we’re probably the only ones that notice- but I thought we could do better and wanted a second chance to record the song the way I thought it could be.

What inspires you guys to write your songs NOW, compared to previously as a three piece ?City Boys” certainly paints an authentic picture of a band awash in the New York scene: attending art exhibitions, playing gallery openings, and generally having a great time.

Lucas: Writing for two guitars feels right and rounds everything out the way I’ve been imagining things from the start- the missing ingredient. The process of writing hasn’t changed, but rather the possibilities have grown. As for what inspires a song that is hard to say. There are many different factors and it changes from song to song. All in all we try and write about what we know and try to take the chance to say something- that’s not to say we do a good job at it. Still a bunch of hacks.

“Want To Be” showcases your life around the city, including some live shots hanging around as well as your energetic live performances. Will there be more videos arriving for your current EP?

Steele: Yeah definitely, we’re currently shooting a video by ourselves for City Boys and are planning another one with our friends Wiissa again for spring of next year. We’re in the middle of recording a some new songs, so you can expect a video for one of those too.

Many, including I want to hear a feature album, a new classic of the ages! Why not yet an album? when and what can we expect? I personally would love to see you work with producer, Gordon Raphael and get the kids inspired once more!

Lucas:Recording an album is the goal and we’re looking forward to the day where that dream becomes a possibility. We’re all big fans of Gordon and grew up listening to those records he produced. Working with him would be a childhood dream come true. The reason why we haven’t jumped into it is because we want it to be right and we want to have the opportunity to do it right, where we’ve fully matured together musically and can work with someone like Gordon.

Muchos, incluyendome, quieren escuchar un álbum, un nuevo clásico de todos los tiempos! ¿Por qué todavía no grabaron un álbum? cuándo y qué podemos esperar? A mi, personalmente me encantaría ver que ustedes trabajen con el productor Gordon Raphael y verlos inspirados una vez más!

Lucas: La grabación de un disco es la meta y estamos deseando que llegue el día en que ese sueño se convierta en una posibilidad. Todos somos grandes fans de Gordon y crecimos escuchando esos discos que produjo. Trabajar con él sería un sueño de infancia hecho realidad. La razón por la que no lo hemos hecho es porque queremos que sea correcto y queremos tener la oportunidad de hacer las cosas bien, cuando hayamos madurado completamente juntos musicalmente y podamos trabajar con alguien como Gordon.

Why should people listen to your latest release and be into the Britanys?

Lucas: I don’t really know. It still crazy to me that people want to listen to the songs and listen to what we have to say. We’re not signed to a record label, literally just four kids recording songs in a basement still. I guess maybe we remind people of a time in music that’s not as present today, who knows. There’s only more to come and it’ll only get better and better.

¿Por qué debería la gente escuchar su último lanzamiento y gustarles The Britanys?

Lucas: Realmente no sé. Todavía me parece loco que la gente quiera escuchar las canciones y lo que tenemos que decir. The tune ‘It’s what it is’ has been playing a lot on any device I have on me at the time and merges influence from The Strokes, and The Libertines. Are they key influences for the band, and are inspirations evolving as the band matures?

Lucas: When we started playing ‘It’s What It Is’ we were still a three piece and it ended up being the song where we were like, shit we need another guitar player. The Strokes and The Libertines will always be influences because those bands are easy for us to relate to and bands that we grew up listening to, but our taste in music is very eclectic and not limited to just that. Our song writing is also still growing and maturing the more that we do it. The goal isn’t to rehash Strokes and Libertines songs. The goal is to create songs that people can listen to and live forever. That warm feeling you get when thinking back on a good time, or the feeling of being out with friends on a Friday night when everything seems to be falling into place- invincible and not giving a fuck.

La melodía de ‘It’s what it is’ ha estado sonando mucho en los dispositivo que tengo en este momento, y fusiona influencias de The Strokes y The Libertines. ¿Son éstas las influencias clave para la banda, y sus inspiraciones van evolucionando a medida que madura la banda?

Lucas: Cuando empezamos a tocar «It´s what it is’, todavía éramos un grupo de tres y terminó siendo la canción donde estábamos como, «mierda necesitamos otro guitarrista». El objetivo es crear canciones que la gente puede escuchar y que vivan por siempre. Esa sensación de calor que sentís cuando recordas un buen momento, o la sensación de estar con amigos en una noche de viernes, cuando todo parece estar cayendo en su lugar- invencibles y no preocupándose por nada.

Where did you record your new release and what equipment ie Guitars, pedals, amps, were used ?

Gabe: We recorded it at home in our basement. We used some vintage mic’s and preamps that I managed to get ahold of, and we have an old Tascam that we’re going to use. As for amps, we used a Vox AC-30, a vintage Orange bass head, and a custom Gretsch kit with a Ludwig surpraphonic snare from the 60’s.

¿Dónde grabaron su nuevo lanzamiento y qué equipo; es decir, Guitarras, pedales, amplificadores, se utilizaron ?

Gabe: Lo grabamos en casa en nuestro sótano. Hemos utilizado algunos micrófonos vintage y preamplificadores que pude conseguir, y tenemos un viejo Tascam que vamos a utilizar. En cuanto a los amplificadores, hemos utilizado un Vox AC-30, un vintage Orange bass head, y un kit personalizado Gretsch con un Ludwig surpraphonic de los años 60.
